Some sad news for those Browncoats hoping to meet “The Man They Call Jayne” this June in Sydney and/or Perth – he has had to postpone his upcoming visit.

The announcement by Supanova states:

Adam ‘Jayne’ Baldwin of Firefly must postpone his Supanova appearance
Supastar Adam Baldwin’s trip to Australia has fallen victim to his own popularity as an actor. Adam, a performer beloved of fans of Firefly, Serenity, Castle, Chuck and The X-Files has been cast in a brand-new, top-secret production and so he can no longer attend this tour for Supanova. he sends his apologies and hopes to visit Supanova in the near future.

While we will miss seeing him, we are looking forward to his next role and hope that he’ll visit our shores soon.

Our monthly social dinner shindig is tonight! If you haven’t yet RSVP’d and would like to join us, please visit our Facebook event page or Forum Event thread. These nights are a great chance to meet your fellow browncoats and have a great time. Misty’s Diner is located at 103-105 High Street, Prahran and you can check out the menu here. We’ll have a booking for 8pm on Friday 18 May (look out for the Jayne hat if you’re new).

Every month, the New Melbourne Browncoats get together for some good food, some great drinks and some fantastic conversation, and this month we’re heading to Prahran to experience Misty’s Diner. Captain America would be quite at home at Misty’s, where all about good food and an eating experience with a vintage “all American” feel.

If you missed out on scoring a free Serenity comic on Free Comic Book Day, then don’t fret. You can now read the Serenity story for free at Dark Horse Comics. Just create an account (that’s free too!) and enjoy! The story, titled “It’s never easy”, takes place after the events in “Serenity” (the film). You can also read the free Buffy/Guild comic featuring “In space, no one can hear you slay” (Buffy) and “Beach’d” (The Guild).

Joss Whedon’s “Cabin in the Woods” will now get a (slightly) extended launch. Roadshow films has announced release locations in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

“Last week we were delighted to secure limited seasons in Sydney and Melbourne for you to see the film. Since then we have been working hard to add in locations in the other states. We are now very excited to confirm that you’ll be able to see the movie at Palace Barracks in QLD, Nova Eastend in SA, and Luna Leederville in WA. Some sites are already on sale so check their websites for booking details! Thanks again for your patience and posts of support.”

If you’d like to join us to watch the film in Melbourne on June 15, check out our Events listing (or our Facebook Event.

For those who missed the link in Joss’s post on Whedonesque.com, we give you Joss Whedon as “The Poop Coach”.

With The Avengers set to pass the $1bn mark at the global box office this weekend in just its third week, it’s perhaps safe to say that 2012 is a very good year to be Joss Whedon.

Following a very successful US opening weekend of The Avengers, Joss has posted a wonderful message on Whedonesque to all his fans, and it makes for a fine read. So click this link and take in his wonderful purple prose.

For those who just want the highlights (you really MUST read the full post… it’s packed to the brim with witty Jossy goodness), here you go.

Dear Friends,

Well, it’s been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can’t wait! But before I become blinded by this “emotion” experience, there’s a few things I’d like to say. Well, type.

What doesn’t change is anything that matters. What doesn’t change is that I’ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of — I’m not even gonna say fans. I’m going with “peeps” — that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I’ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y’all. A lot of stories have come out about my “dark years”, and how I’m “unrecognized”… I love these stories, because they make me seem super-important, but I have never felt the darkness (and I’m ALL about my darkness) that they described. Because I have so much. I have people, in my life, on this site, in places I’ve yet to discover, that always made me feel the truth of success: an artist and an audience communicating. Communicating to the point of collaborating. I’ve thought, “maybe I’m over; maybe I’ve said my piece”. But never with fear. Never with rancor. Because of y’all. Because you knew me when. If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you’re probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I’m an alien, not a robot.) So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You’ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go “I told you so”, to those Joe Blows not in the know. (LAST time I hire Dr. Seuss to punch my posts up. Yeesh!) Point being, you deserve some honor, AND you deserves some FAQs answered.

FAQs include “What does this mean for your upcoming slate of tiny independent films/Internet shenanigans? Will they fall by the wayside? And TV?” and “What’s next for Joss “finally got it right for a change” Whedon?”

Supanova has added Adam Baldwin to the lineup for it’s upcoming Sydney and Perth events in June. This will be Adam’s first convention appearance in Australia, and we’re sure that many Browncoats will be on hand to welcome him what is sure to (temporarily) be known as Jaynestown.

Supanova will be in Sydney on 15-17 June and in Perth on 22-24 June. Adam looks forward to meeting all his fans at both the Sydney and Perth expos in 2012. There are signing and photo sessions throughout each Saturday (10.30am to 5.30pm) and Sunday (11am to 5pm) excluding breaks and there’s a general admission Q&A during each weekend. Autographs are $40 each and photographs are $50 each. For tickets and show information, click here.

Browncoats are in for a treat this weekend! A special Serenity / Star Wars comic from Dark Horse Comics” will be given away free on Free Comic Book Day!Free Comic Book Day is a day when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops to promote the joy of reading comics.

The special issue features 2 stories – a Serenity tale, and a separate Star Wars tale (though a cross over would have been interesting!).

“Mal” Reynolds, captain of the outlaw vessel Serenity, is no stranger to jobs gone wrong. But when the chips are down, he’s able to rely on an amazing, odd, and diversely talented crew for help!

Han Solo and Chewbacca have a falling-out after a deal with a shady customer goes bad. When the client gets designs on the Millennium Falcon, Han and Chewie present a united front that can’t be beat!

Two great space epics in one issue!

So get on down to your local participating comic store this Saturday and pick up a copy! Participating Melbourne stores include All Star Comics (who will have creator signings, costume contest and more to celebrate the day), Gifts For The Geek and Classic Comics.

Roadshow Films has announced that Joss Whedon’s “Cabin in the Woods” will not be getting a full cinema release anymore. But fans in Melbourne and Sydney will still have the chance to see it in a limited release. According to this update from Roadshow Films, it will screen at Cinema Nova (Melbourne) and Chauvel Cinema (Sydney) from June 14.

Cabin in the Woods (CITW) provides a new twist on the classic young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope, when a group of college kids spend a weekend at a mysterious cabin in the woods. The film features Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (currently riding high on the success of The Avengers) and NZ actress Anna Hutchison as well as the Whedonverse’s Amy Acker and Fran Kranz.

Roadshow previously announced that CITW would be released in cinemas on 21 July 2012 (some 3 months after the US release), but then announced that fans will have to rely on an (as-yet-not-announced) DVD release.

We’re very sorry to confirm that Cabin In The Woods will not be getting an Australian cinema release. Many of you have been asking for reconsideration, but unfortunately CITW won’t be released in Australian cinemas, and will be released straight to DVD instead. We know that this confirmation is disappointing news, but hopefully this means you’ll be able to see it on DVD sooner than originally scheduled.

Fans and critics expressed their disappointment on Roadshow’s Tumbler, Facebook and Twitter, and Roadshow have listened to the pleas and granted a limited release – but only in Melbourne and Sydney.

Dear Cabin In The Woods fans,
Your response has been overwhelming. We’ve been listening since the beginning, but wanted to wait until we could confirm the good news before updating you. We are pleased to announce that you will have the opportunity to see the film on the big screen! Cabin will playing from June 14th in Sydney and Melbourne for a limited season at these venues: Sydney – Chauvel Cinema; Melbourne – Cinema Nova. We genuinely appreciate all of your posts and comments, and we have been working hard behind the scenes to try and secure these dates. Thank you for being so passionate about The Cabin In The Woods. We hope you enjoy watching the film on the big screen!
